Figuring out food labels

The pursuit of a healthy lifestyle can be tricky when it comes to including packaged foods. While convenient, it is important to understand the nutritional information on the label to ensure the quality of the food inside.

Serving size matters

All the nutritional information is based on the serving size.

Check the fat

Take note of the saturated and trans fat content. Generally, for our overall health it is best to keep saturated fats and cholesterol low and avoid trans fats altogether.

Keep sodium down

Look for reduced salt or unsalted varieties to keep your salt intake in check.

Go for fibre

Look for foods that contain a good amount of fibre per serving, at least 1 g for every 10 g of carbohydrates.

Beware of sugar

Keep a lookout for foods that contain sugar in the first three ingredients. Sugar is almost pure carbohydrate and contains no nutritional value. Other names for sugar include fructose, dextrose, maltose, and glucose.
